A bizalom és függőség szerepe a családi gazdaságok együttműködésében végzett gépi munkákban AgEcon
Takacs, Istvan; Baranyai, Zsolt.

A Case for Re-evaluation of Income Averaging for Primary Producers AgEcon
Douglas, Robert A.; Davenport, Scott V..
Income averaging for primary producers is a long-standing tax policy in Australia. Major changes were made to the scheme in 1983 to overcome anomalies associated with the previous scheme. However the amended scheme has not been subject to review. In this review, the scheme is found to perform poorly against the traditional evaluation criteria of equity, efficiency and simplicity. The general conclusion is that to avoid cross-subsidisation and investment distortions which are often inherent features of any general scheme, it is appropriate to consider the adequacy of self-averaging mechanisms.

A Case Study of an NGOs Ecotourism Efforts: Findings Based on a Survey of Visitors to its Tropical Nature Reserve AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This article outlines the efforts of a small NGO, the Mareeba Wetland Foundation, to conserve nature and conduct tourism at its Mareeba Tropical Savanna Wetland Reserve in northern Queensland. It provides background about the establishment of the reserve and its nature and draws on the results from a survey of visitors to this reserve. It provides a socio-economic profile of visitors, their frequency of visits to it and their knowledge of it prior to visiting. This knowledge is found, on the whole, to be poor. The way in which visitors decided to visit the reserve is also considered as are indicators of the economic surplus obtained from visits. Because for most visitors their visit was an experiential good, doubts are raised about the traditional method...

A Comparative Analysis of Agricultural Transportation and Logistics Systems in the United States and Argentina AgEcon
Goldsby, Thomas J..
Interest is high in Argentina as an emerging economic power in the Americas. This paper analyzes issues pertinent to the relative advantages and disadvantages of transportation and logistics systems between the United States and Argentina in the context of distribution to significant global markets. Designed as a tool for agribusiness students and prospective investment and trade partners, it provides a side-by-side analysis of U.S. and Argentine rail, motor, and water transportation systems. Also from a comparative perspective, it examines grain storage capacities and systems.

A Comparison of Approaches to Mitigate Hypothetical Bias AgEcon
Champ, Patricia A.; Moore, Rebecca; Bishop, Richard C..
We compare two approaches to mitigating hypothetical bias. The study design includes three treatments: an actual payment treatment, a contingent valuation (CV) treatment with a follow-up certainty question, and a CV treatment with a cheap talk script. Our results suggest that both the follow-up certainty treatment and the cheap talk treatment produce willingness-to-pay (WTP) estimates consistent with the actual payment treatment. However, the follow-up certainty treatment provides response distributions at all offer amounts that are statistically similar to the actual payment treatment, while the cheap talk treatment provides similar responses only at some offer amounts. Furthermore, the cheap talk treatment is effective only for inexperienced individuals....

A CRISE DO PODER ESTATAL E A REPRODUÇÃO DO CAPITALISMO AgEcon
Siqueira, Euler David de.
In advanced capitalist societies, classified by Claus Offe as tardy-capitalists, one verifies a structural contradiction among the logics concerning valorization of capital and the processes of the publicadministration system. The continuous increase of work taxes in services, use values-producing work, or concrete work, usually classified as improductive work of higher value in advanced capitalist societies, according to Claus Offe, increasingly becomes a structural condition so that part of the work force may be converted into production of abstract trade/work values or into the merchandise social form. According to the Offean analysis on the growth of political-administrative systems in societies of tardy-capitalism, when organizing a portion of the...

“A Definition at Last, But What Does it All Mean?” Newspaper Coverage of Organic Food Production and its Effects on Milk Purchases AgEcon
Kiesel, Kristin.
This paper estimates the effects of media coverage of organic food production on food purchases. Information from several data sources links national and local newspaper coverage to fluid milk purchases. An analysis of weekly store-level scanner data in a differences-in-differences approach results in a 5% increase in organic milk sales relative to conventional milk sales. Increases in intensity of news coverage increase this relative difference in sales. Differentiating effects by media context further suggests that product category specific coverage increases sales more than general coverage. Critical coverage does not result in significant effects on organic milk sales.

A FLAT RATE TAX: IMPACTS ON REPRESENTATIVE HOG AND GRAIN FARMS AgEcon
Doye, Damona G.; Boehlje, Michael.
This paper focuses on identifying shifts in the tax burden within agriculture associated with various flat tax proposals by comparing their effects on farms with different enterprise combinations, resource bases, and financial characteristics. In general, the flat tax imposes higher average tax burdens on small farms and yields a tax cut from ERTA laws for large farms even when the tax base is broadened.

A HEDONIC APPROACH TO ESTIMATING OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS FOR NEW YORK MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEMS AgEcon
Schmit, Todd M.; Boisvert, Richard N..
A hedonic cost function is used to isolate the operation and maintenance costs for water treatments. For small systems, costs are substantial for some technologies, but not for others. When regional differences in input costs are accounted for, small systems located in rural areas may have a cost advantage over similar systems closer to urban centers; however, costs of water treatment to meet Safe Drinking Water Act amendments may still be substantial.

A helyi akciócsoportok működése egy országos felmérés tükrében AgEcon
Kiss, Krisztian; Szekeresne, Koteles Rita.
A tanulmányban kérdőíves felmérésünk eredményeire támaszkodva bemutatjuk a 2007-ben megalakult LEADER HACS-ok fontosabb működési jellemzőit. Országos felmérésünkből kiderül, hogy nincsen hagyománya, gyakorlata a fejlesztésekben való együttműködésnek, holott a helyi program végrehajtása nagymértékben múlik a helyi társadalom felkészültségén, az emberek és szervezetek együttműködésén. A HACS-ok által lefedett térségek fejlődését több vonatkozásban a humán erőforrások, a vidéki emberek és közösségeik (az ún. szoft tényezők) hiányosságai gátolják, következésképpen sürgető a humán erőforrások fejlesztése is. A HACS-ok feladatuknak a támogatási források odaítélését tartják, ami fontos, de korántsem elégséges ahhoz, hogy a tőlük elvárt, a helyi vidékfejlesztési...

A MODEL OF JOB CHOICE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT AgEcon
Lloyd, Peter J..
The paper presents a model of choice between alternative available jobs in which each job has an uncertain multi-period income prospect. Imperfectly informed expectations as well as job preferences and attitudes to risk determine the choice. The model is used to locate and discuss some problems of designing government programs which are intended to increase job mobility. The main conclusion is that government interventions may impose costs on the economy which are greater than the benefits because the information needed to assess costs and benefits is not generally available and political pressures may distort the expenditures.

A Multicriteria Approach for the Evaluation of the Sustainability of Re-use of Historic Buildings in Venice AgEcon
Giove, Silvio; Rosato, Paolo; Breil, Margaretha.
The paper presents a multiple criteria model for the evaluation of the sustainability of projects for the economic re-use of historical buildings in Venice. The model utilises the relevant parameters for the appraisal of sustainability, aggregated into three macro-indicators: intrinsic sustainability, context sustainability and economic-financial feasibility. The model has been calibrated by a panel of experts and tested on two reuse hypotheses of the Old Arsenal in Venice. The tests have proven the model to be a useful support in the early stages of evaluation of re-use projects, where economic improvements are to be combined with conservation, as it supports the identification of critical points and the selection of projects, thus providing not only a...
